NFI data
The sample plot data of the 12th national forest inventory (NFI12) from the years 2017-2018 and NFI13 from the years 2019–2021 were used in the calculations. However, for the area of Northern Lapland (municipalities Enontekiö, Inari and Utsjoki) the NFI11 data measured during years 2012-2013 were used.
The results for the area of Ahvenanmaa region are based on the results calculated in year 2020 using NFI12 data, which was measured in year 2018. After that in January 2019 storm Aapeli caused considerable damage to the forests in the Ahvenanmaa region (Ihalainen et al. 2022).
MELA data
The calculation data for MELA consists of the NFI sample plots defined either as forest land or as poorly productive forest land (scrub land). The sample plot stands intersecting with the plot, so stands without a plot center point, were excluded if there were no tree measurements. The total amount of the calculation units was 56 751.
Forest management categories
The management units were classified into three categories according to sample plot restrictions concerning wood production:
Land areas and growing stock volumes (over bark) by management categories of MELA data which were formed according to the NFI field measurements for the whole country.
Management category | Area, mill. ha |
Prooportion, % of total area |
||
Forest land | Scrub land | Total | ||
No restrictions for wood production | 17.06 | -* | 17.06 | 74.8 |
Restrictions for wood production | 1.22 | 1.16 | 2.38 | 10.4 |
No wood production allowed | 1.88 | 1.48 | 3.36 | 14.7 |
Total | 20.17 | 2.64 | 22.80 | 100.0 |
Volume, mill. m3 |
Prooportion, % of total volume |

No restrictions for wood production | 2 035 | - * | 2 035 | 81.0 |
Restrictions for wood production | 171 | 31 | 202 | 8.0 |
No wood production allowed | 234 | 40 | 274 | 10.9 |
Total | 2 441 | 70 | 2 511 | 100.0 |
* Scrub land (poorly productive forest land) belongs either in category restricted wood production allowed or in no wood production allowed. However,in the calculation there were no logging events on scrub land. |
