NFI data
The field data of the 10th national forest inventory (NFI10) were measured during years 2004-2008 in Southern Finland, 2005-2008 in Northern Finland and 2007 in Aland (Ahvenanmaa). In Northern Lapland (municipalities Enontekiö, Inari and Utsjoki) the field data from NFI9 (measured 2003) were used.

MELA data
The calculation data for MELA consists of the NFI sample plots defined either as forest land or as poorly productive forest land (scrub land). Due to the small sizes of relascope plots which do not represent a stand properly, sample plots are linked with other sample plots (4-6) similar in terms of stand characteristics. The grouping is made for each sample plot separately resulting as many management units as there are original sample plots. The management unit characters are formed by summarizing sample plots. Management decisions are based on the characteristics of a management unit but the actions are carried out by sample plots. The sample plots represent the variation within the management unit.

The management units were classified into three categories according to sample plot restrictions concerning wood production:
